Course Description
This course designed to help students understand the impact of individual choices on occupational goals and future earnings potential. Topics covered will include income, spending, investing, taxes, managing risk, types of credit, managing credit, and saving. This course will provide a foundational understanding for making informed personal financial decisions.
Managing Risk
Learn this: I will learn how to compare insurance plans and provide guidance on minimizing risks like scams and identity theft.
Do this: I will create a project that demonstrates what I have learned and includes this information:
Compare different insurance plans for life, auto, health, and home/renter's insurance and decide which one is best for me
Understand why insurance costs vary and how much money I might have to pay if something happens
Help others avoid scams and identity theft by giving them advice on how to stay safe and protect themselves

Investing
Learn this: I will learn how to compare ways to invest money, calculate returns and future values, and advisee on reaching financial goals.
Do this: I will create a project that demonstrates what I have learned and includes this information:
Compare and explain how individuals invest in stocks, bonds, and mutual funds
Compute the following:
return on investments
future value of investments
payment to reach a financial goal
Strategies for making good investments and common mistakes to avoid

Consumer Loans
Learn this: I will learn how analyze loans, calculate interest and charges, and understand factors lenders consider for loan decisions.
Do this: I will create a project that demonstrates what I have learned and includes this information:
Calculate loan interest and service charges to help choose a lending institution
Compare personal and student loans, and calculate their finance charges and monthly payments
Compare buying vs. leasing a car and calculate their costs.
Identify factors lenders consider, like debt-to-income ratios, when making loan decisions

Credit
Learn this: I will learn how to compare credit plans and credit card terms, weigh the pros and cons of cash and credit cards, understand how credit ratings impact loan approvals, and calculate finance charges for credit cards.

Compare credit plans and evaluate credit card terms and conditions.
Analyze the advantages and disadvantages of using cash versus a credit card.
Explain how credit rating is established and how credit rating affects a consumer’s ability to obtain a loan.
Compute finance charges for a credit card.
