Parent Support:
When a parent agrees to become part of the Snake River Opportunities High School community, they are committing to providing support to the students in the school as outlined in the Community Agreements. It is recommended that the parents/guardians be extremely involved as students start their learning journey with SROHS but being aware they must be intentional about gradually releasing responsibility for learning to students. Our school helps families understand how much involvement they need to have by implementing a “Level Up” process. More about this process can be found later in this handbook, but for now it is helpful to know that successful parental/guardian support looks like:
Helping your student to create a routine (time) for learning and encouraging engagement in synchronous learning opportunities, including Homebase and Power Up times;
Helping your student create a learning space that is conducive to their learning style;
Checking your personal email for communication from teachers or SROHS administrators and encouraging and facilitating your students' consistent communication with their teachers and administrators;
Using the online tools to monitor student progress including Google Classroom and Schoolytics;
Advocating with the student’s mentor for your student when they are struggling;
Helping students understand the Frameworks for Learning and content teacher provided resources;
Helping students to get appropriate tools for learning by working with SROHS content teachers;
Ensure students have needed technological tools (i.e. internet, Chromebook or Laptop; Note: it is very difficult to be successful solely using a phone).
Helping your student to understand plagiarism and the effects of misrepresenting someone else’s work as their own. Check out this Plagiarism One-Pager to understand plagiarism.
