Creative Writing A
Course Description
This course provides an opportunity for high school students to pursue creative writing work. Students will have an introduction to elements and craft of various genres of creative writing including argumentative, informative, narrative, research, persuasive, and production and distribution of writing. Students can draw from their own experiences or from learning in other courses.
Text Types and Purposed
Learn this: I will learn how to write arguments, informative/explanatory texts, and narratives.
Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:
Create a clear, purposeful, and engaging introduction.
Write claims and back them up with textual evidence.
Use word choice that is appropriate for audience and purpose.
Grow from: I will respond to teacher feedback.
Write Arguments to Support Claims
Learn this: I will learn to use valid reasoning and relevant and sufficient evidence.
Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:
Develop claim(s) and counterclaims fairly, supplying evidence for each.
Use words, phrases, and clauses to link major sections of the text.
Establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone while attending to the norms and conventions of the discipline in which you I am writing.
Grow from: I will respond to teacher feedback.
Write Informative/Explanatory Texts
Learn this: I will learn to write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas.
Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:
Introduce a topic; organize complex ideas, concepts, and information to make important connections.
Use appropriate and varied transitions to link the major sections of the text.
Establish and maintain a formal style and objective tone while attending to the norms and conventions of the discipline in which I am writing.
Grow from: I will respond to teacher feedback.
Write Narratives
Learn this: I will learn to write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events.
Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:
Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, reflection, and multiple plot lines, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters.
Use a variety of techniques to sequence events so that they build on one another.
Use precise words and phrases, telling details, and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the experiences, events, setting, and/or characters.
