Book Study
Course Description
SROHS is excited to offer Book Study options throughout the school year. Participating in a Book Study can lead to a deeper understanding of students’ reading, as well as help to build community with peers and teachers.
The Book Study course will provide some fiction and non-fiction books to choose from. Students may choose more than one! Several teachers will lead a Book Study and let students know how much to read to be ready for the group discussions.
Volume of Reading to Build Knowledge
Learn this: I will learn how to gather information and present my findings in a format of my choice.
Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:
Conduct research by gathering information.
Organize my findings into a structured essay, report, infographic, or other format of my choice.
Cite my sources using in-text citations.
Create a Works Cited page in MLA or APA format.
Proofread my work to ensure it is free of errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
Grow from: I will respond to teacher feedback.
Learning Goal: I will be able to make reading a regular part of my learning routine. I will be able to select and read books and articles related to the topics I am studying in school. I will also be able to use reading to deepen my understanding of these topics, and learn new words and concepts in the process. I will become a more curious and engaged learner who is able to independently explore and learn about a variety of subjects.
Read regularly and participate in a Book Study, or you can submit a written piece to show your learning: essay, report, slideshow, infographic, video, audio, etc…
Demonstrate an ability to understand and analyze the material you read, by taking notes, summarizing key points, and asking questions to deepen understanding.
Seek out new words and concepts in your reading, and use strategies such as context clues and dictionaries to learn and retain them.
Reflect on your reading experiences and identify what you have learned and apply your new knowledge to your studies and daily life

I will be able to identify important details and ideas from the text and support my interpretations with evidence from the text. I will also be able to explain how the author’s choices contribute to the overall meaning of the text. I will become a more confident and critical reader who can analyze and interpret a variety of texts.
