Book Study

Course Description

SROHS is excited to offer Book Study options throughout the school year. Participating in a Book Study can lead to a deeper understanding of students’ reading, as well as help to build community with peers and teachers. 

The Book Study course will provide some fiction and non-fiction books to choose from. Students may choose more than one! Several teachers will lead a Book Study and let students know how much to read to be ready for the group discussions.


Volume of Reading to Build Knowledge

Learn this: I will learn how to gather information and present my findings in a format of my choice.

Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:

Grow from: I will respond to teacher feedback.


Learning Goal: I will be able to make reading a regular part of my learning routine. I will be able to select and read books and articles related to the topics I am studying in school. I will also be able to use reading to deepen my understanding of these topics, and learn new words and concepts in the process. I will become a more curious and engaged learner who is able to independently explore and learn about a variety of subjects.



Textual Evidence

Learning Goal: I will be able to effectively use examples and information from a text to support my ideas and arguments. I will be able to identify relevant details and evidence from the text to support my point of view. I will become a more persuasive and effective communicator, both in writing and in discussions.



Literature and/or Nonfiction Text

Learn this: I will learn how to gather information and present my findings in a format of my choice.

Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:

Grow from: I will respond to teacher feedback.


Learning Goal: I will be able to use evidence from literature to show my comprehension of grade-level texts. I will be able to identify important details and ideas from the text and support my interpretations with evidence from the text. I will also be able to explain how the author’s choices contribute to the overall meaning of the text. I will become a more confident and critical reader who can analyze and interpret a variety of texts.



Speaking and Listening

Learning Goal: I will be able to effectively participate in collaborative discussions with my peers about topics and texts. I will be able to respond to questions and comments from my peers with precise evidence, relevant observations, and new ideas. I will be able to consider and make new connections based on the evidence and reasoning presented by others while respecting diverse perspectives. I will become a more effective collaborator and communicator and will be able to contribute to productive and meaningful discussions with my peers.
