Spanish 1 A
Course Description
During this year, students will begin to understand and communicate in another language. Our main focus will be on the language, but we will also explore the cultures of the Spanish speaking world. Each semester the student will have four topics of study, and learn appropriate vocabulary and language structures to have basic communications in Spanish in those limited areas. Within each language topic, students progress in the categories of listening, reading, speaking, and writing, as well as a short culture assignment.
First Conversations
Learn this: I will be able to participate in two basic conversations: introducing myself to someone, and greeting someone. I will begin to learn vocabulary words such as numbers, colors, and greetings.
Do this: I will create a project that demonstrates what I have learned and includes this information:
Video, record, or speak with my teacher, having the two introductory conversations.
Research and share about a Spanish speaking country.
Grow from: I will respond to teacher feedback.
Talking About People
Learn this: I will be able to communicate about likes and dislikes, hobbies, school, and describing people. The Culture focus is on a famous Spanish-speaking person.
Do this: I will create a project that demonstrates what I have learned and includes this information:
Speak and write about myself and others in short conversations.
Practice until I can communicate about these subjects in Spanish.
Grow from: I will respond to teacher feedback.
Going and Doing
Learn this: I will learn vocabulary and language structures so I can communicate about places around town, activities, as well as animals and foods.
Do this: I will create a project that demonstrates what I have learned and includes this information:
Listen to podcasts, commercials, and dialogs
Reading Spanish by watching subtitles or using a textbook or workbook
Writing down simple sentences using the vocabulary of the Topic
Speaking in simple conversations
Cultural study is food- cook and share a recipe

Daily Life
Learn this: I will learn to communicate about family relationships, holidays, household items, and my daily routine.
Do this: I will create a project that demonstrates what I have learned and includes this information:
Listen to a conversation about family life and understand it.
Read a description of a holiday celebration and write out a related skit or paragraph.
Have a short conversation with my teacher, or record myself speaking in Spanish using the related vocabulary.
Develop my understanding of the culture by researching a holiday celebration.
