Course Description
To become ready for Next Steps after high school, students must learn about and practice reading and writing. In this course, students will grapple with grammar, vocabulary, reading skills, and comprehension of broad categories of written material. In addition, they will learn techniques to organize written, oral, and multimedia presentations to communicate with others, learn to conduct research, and cite the materials to attribute references appropriately. Ultimately, students will become a more creative and critical thinker as they work through the English portfolios. Our units are written based on the Idaho State Standards and are organized according to the suggested course guidelines.
Grammar, Usage, & Mechanics
Learn this: I will learn and have command of the conventions of English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:
Create writing that demonstrates my competence in using correct punctuation, capitalization, spelling, various sentence structure, syntax, formal speech, and informal speech.

Digital Communication
Learn this: I will be able to evaluate the credibility and accuracy of digital media sources.
Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:
Choose a topic of interest and research multiple sources of information on the topic, including articles, videos, images, and infographics.
Create a digital media presentation on my topic:
Written report, digital representation, video, audio clip, infographic, or slideshow
Use in-text citations and create a Works Cited page using MLA or APA format.

Oral Communication
Learn this: I will evaluate a speaker's oral communication and the techniques used in print and electronic journalism.
Do this: I will create a project that shows that I know how to:
Analyze my chosen text and images to determine the tone, language use, bias, and purpose.
Determine the speaker's point of view, reasoning, use of evidence, and rhetorical strategies.
Create a presentation that summarizes my findings and conclusions including specific examples from the text or speech.
