October 20–24, 2025 | University of Idaho McCall Outdoor Science School

🌍 Why We Go

MOSS isn’t just a field trip—it’s a learning adventure! Students earn Outdoor Science credit through hands-on fieldwork, hiking, and exploration in Idaho’s mountain ecosystem. The week builds teamwork, confidence, and curiosity in one of the most beautiful classrooms in the world.

🚌 Travel Plan (Tentative)

This plan may adjust slightly depending on weather, traffic, or loading times.

Departure – Monday Morning (October 20)

• 5:40 AM – Snake River District Office

• 5:55 AM – A&W Restaurant (320 US-26, Blackfoot)

• 6:30 AM – Walmart near McDonald’s (4240 Yellowstone Ave, Chubbuck)

• 8:15 AM – Flying J Travel Center (5350 US-93, Jerome)

• 8:50 AM – Love’s Travel Stop (680 US-30, Bliss)

• 10:45 AM – Krispy Kreme Donuts (2864 E State St, Eagle)

• 1:00 PM – Arrive at MOSS, McCall

Return – Friday Afternoon (October 24)

• 10:15 AM – Leave MOSS

• 12:30 PM – Eagle

• 2:15 PM – Bliss

• 2:45 PM – Jerome

• 4:30 PM – Chubbuck

• 5:00 PM – Blackfoot

• 5:15 PM – Snake River District Office

🕓 Pickup Reminder: Students should text families about 20 minutes before arrival.

📱 Technology

• Students may bring phones for the bus ride—we expect every student will have one to communicate with family before and after the trip.

• When we arrive, phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and earphones will be sealed in a labeled bag and locked on the bus for safekeeping.

• You won’t have access to your phone during the week—MOSS is a screen-free experience!

💪 Your Role as a Teammate & Leader

• Be the calm in the chaos. Stay respectful, steady, and positive—even when you’re tired.

• Work as a team. Listen to instructors, chaperones, and each other. Everyone’s safety and success depend on teamwork.

• Set the standard. Keep your cabin or yurt clean, respect quiet time, and help others do the same.

• Quiet time matters. It’s how your body and mind recharge for the next day’s adventure.

• Follow directions the first time to keep things running smoothly and safely.

• Be curious, kind, and inclusive. The way you treat others will shape everyone’s experience.

🎒 What to Pack

MOSS is at 5,000 ft elevation — days can be mild, but nights are cold (20–30°F). You’ll be outdoors all week, so layering is key! No laundry is available, so pack for five days.

👕 Must-Haves

• Warm sleeping bag, pillow, and pajamas

• Fitted sheet for a twin bed – mattresses have plastic covers and can be noisy or cold without one

• Waterproof boots or sturdy shoes

• Insulated jacket, rain gear, gloves, and warm hat

• 2–3 pairs of pants, long underwear, and warm layers

• Daypack, water bottle, flashlight/headlamp

• Toiletries, towel, deodorant, sunscreen, and lip balm

• Flip-flops or shower shoes

• 💵 $30–$50 optional spending money for the MOSS Store (souvenirs, snacks, or gear)

• 🥪 Sack lunch for the bus ride to MOSS

• ✂️ Reminder: Trim your toenails before the trip! You’ll be hiking, and long nails can make walking in boots painful by midweek.

🚫 Leave at Home

• Knives, tools, weapons, or fireworks

• Radios, gaming systems, or other electronics

• Valuables or anything you can’t afford to lose

🛌 Cabins, Free Time & Quiet Hours

• Cabins and yurts are gender-specific—no exceptions.

• Always use the Rule of 3: never alone—always with a buddy or group.

• At bedtime, pick a bathroom buddy for the night.

• Quiet time starts early—lights out at 10:15 PM.

• Respect others who are trying to rest. Adults will check in each night.

❤️ Health & Safety

• Tell a staff member right away if you feel sick, hurt, or uncomfortable.

• Drink water, eat well, and dress for the weather—it can change fast!

• In an emergency, follow directions from MOSS or SROHS staff immediately.
