MOSS isnât just a field tripâitâs a learning adventure! Students earn Outdoor Science credit through hands-on fieldwork, hiking, and exploration in Idahoâs mountain ecosystem. The week builds teamwork, confidence, and curiosity in one of the most beautiful classrooms in the world.

đ Pickup Reminder: Students should text families about 20 minutes before arrival.
Students may bring phones for the bus rideâwe expect every student will have one to communicate with family before and after the trip.
When we arrive, phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and earphones will be sealed in a labeled bag and locked on the bus for safekeeping.
You wonât have access to your phone during the weekâMOSS is a screen-free experience!

Be the calm in the chaos. Stay respectful, steady, and positiveâeven when youâre tired.
Work as a team. Listen to instructors, chaperones, and each other. Everyoneâs safety and success depend on teamwork.
Set the standard. Keep your cabin or yurt clean, respect quiet time, and help others do the same.
Quiet time matters. Itâs how your body and mind recharge for the next dayâs adventure.
Follow directions the first time to keep things running smoothly and safely.
Be curious, kind, and inclusive. The way you treat others will shape everyoneâs experience.
MOSS is at 5,000 ft elevation â days can be mild, but nights are cold (20â30°F). Youâll be outdoors all week, so layering is key! No laundry is available, so pack for five days.

Warm sleeping bag, pillow, and pajamas
Fitted sheet for a twin bed â mattresses have plastic covers and can be noisy or cold without one
Waterproof boots or sturdy shoes
Insulated jacket, rain gear, gloves, and warm hat
2â3 pairs of pants, long underwear, and warm layers
Daypack, water bottle, flashlight/headlamp
Toiletries, towel, deodorant, sunscreen, and lip balm
Flip-flops or shower shoes

âïž Reminder: Trim your toenails before the trip! Youâll be hiking, and long nails can make walking in boots painful by midweek.

Knives, tools, weapons, or fireworks
Radios, gaming systems, or other electronics
Valuables or anything you canât afford to lose
Cabins and yurts are gender-specificâno exceptions.
Always use the Rule of 3: never aloneâalways with a buddy or group.
At bedtime, pick a bathroom buddy for the night.
Quiet time starts earlyâlights out at 10:15 PM.
Respect others who are trying to rest. Adults will check in each night.
Tell a staff member right away if you feel sick, hurt, or uncomfortable.
Drink water, eat well, and dress for the weatherâit can change fast!
In an emergency, follow directions from MOSS or SROHS staff immediately.
